Our allies?

In his column today, Tom Friedman characterizes the British press as "our allies." He is conflating his liberal allies in the British press with the U.K..

As for "plowing under" Gitmo, we would never be able to imprison terrorists within the existing federal justice system. Our courts would be clogged—up for years. And who, exactly, is going to testify against them in open court, when that means a death sentence for the witness?
