Promises, promises

Remember back in the early days of Bush's second presidential win when self styled  tolerant, open minded, diversity loving, democracy advocates shrieked they couldn't live under four more years of a Bush regime so they were decamping to Canada?  Well, well, well—— they're still here. 

In the days after President Bush won a second term, the number of U.S. citizens visiting Canada's main immigration Web site shot up sixfold, prompting speculation that unhappy Democrats would flock north.

But official statistics show the number of Americans actually applying to live permanently in Canada fell in the six months after the election.

And why is this?
Toby Condliffe, who heads the Canadian chapter of Democrats Abroad, did have an explanation of sorts.

"I can only assume the Americans who checked out the Web site subsequently checked out our winter temperatures and further took note that the National Hockey League was being locked out and had second thoughts," he told Reuters.

Oh of course, no hockey and the shock that Canada is colder than Florida.  Not the inability to get a job there while leaving a good one here; not that the vaunted Canadian socialist free medical system has long waits for basic care; not even inertia.  Just the surprise that Canada has bad weather and no hockey.
 
In the meantime, I  wonder how many Canadians have left their cold weather, hockeyless paradise to move to the US?
