When someone is too afraid to try something new and unfamiliar like the Democrats now, they are said to be like drunks who lose their car keys on the dark side of the street but look for them under the street lamp (across the way) because the light is better. They keep looking at changing their rhetoric (to fool voters) and even more left wing positions, because that is where their custom and ideology take them.
