Thompson's 'Christmas Message to the Troops' a Hit
Most of the big conservative bloggers are staying neutral so far in the Republican presidential race so it is significant when many of them come out in praise of an ad run by a specific candidate:
CapQ readers want to have an eggnog with him, and now we know why. Fred Thompson just released the best Christmas ad in this cycle, one in which no one will find floating crosses, holiday fruitcake, downer lighting, and especially tone-deaf "gifts" of expanded entitlements under the Christmas tree. Instead, Thompson reminds us that we have other Americans than Presidential candidates to keep in our thoughts on this holiday:The ad has a smooth, jazzy piano playing "We Wish you a Merry Christmas" in the background with still pictures of our troops. The simple caption: "This Holiday Season, let us reflect on their courage and Sacrifice."
Thompson knows how to hit the right buttons, and do it with class.
The ad can be seen here.
Ed Morrissey is talking about the controversy over Mike Huckabee's blatantly religious ad targeted toward Christian conservatives and Hillary's weird "gift giving" ad of her pet programs - not mentioning of course, that her "gifts" to the taxpayer would have to be paid for by the gift recipients themselves.
Ed's not the only big blogger to note the Christmas message positively. Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit features the video on his site as does Wizbang. The video has been viewed nearly 30,000 times on the You Tube site and tens of thousands of additional hits on blogs.
The campaigns will shut down for the Christmas holidays after today. The polls show Thompson making some progress in his bid to finish at least a strong third. The question is will Fred be able to maintain the small amount of momentum he has been able to generate since the last Republican debate and build on it next week in order to finish strong ahead of the January 3 caucuses.
