When it comes to US foreign policy (such as it is) and ISIS, the Obama administration continues to unravel an ever-changing story. Over the course of 72-hours which ended yesterday, the administration claimed that:

ISIS is not Islamic.

• ISIS is not a state.
• ISIS has no vision.
• ISIS is distorting the true nature of Islam.
• No religion condones killing innocent people, and certainly not Islam which is a peaceful and great religion.
• We are not at war with ISIS. We are engaged in a counterterrorism operation.

However on Friday, communication (such as it is) continued down a desperate path as administration officials tried their best to avoid using certain words. But apparently the word “war” could no longer be avoided, so they created a little narrative around it. The new verbiage is this:  We are at war with ISIS in the same way we are at war with al Qaeda

Ohhhhhh, ok. I see.

The stooges selected to roll out this new meme were the White House press secretary and a Pentagon spokesperson.

Then some genius at the White House decided to get really clever and throw this into the mix, as stated by Josh Earnest:

This is not a situation where it’s the United States against ISIL. The fact is ISIL has indicated that they’re ready to go to war against the world….

So, to recap (as of Friday):

• We are not at war with ISIS.
• The United States is not against ISIL.
• We are at war with ISIS

BUT

not like the way you normally think of war and please don’t use that word too much because what we’re doing is something different.

• The United States is not against ISIL because ISIL seems to be considering some violence against people the world over and so we can’t take sole responsibility for standing up to them since it’s a worldwide problem and so we’re not against them all by ourselves and anyway ISIS isn’t Islamic and Islam is peaceful and please leave us alone because you’re confusing us and forcing us to say things we don’t understand or want to say or be responsible for or anything. OK?
