No olive branch Tuesday, Mr. President
Senate minority leader Schumer has stated, "[I]f my Republican colleagues refuse to consider witnesses and documents in this trial, the president's acquittal will be meaningless, because it will be the result of a sham trial."
Republican senators did go on to reject a proposal to "consider witnesses and documents" in President Trump's Senate trial, so Schumer's view must be that the acquittal expected next week "will be meaningless, because it will be the result of a sham trial." This no doubt will be the position of the Democrat Party as a whole and is sure to be featured prominently in their response to the State of the Union address.
Well, so be it.
I offer the following:
- Any gestures of conciliation in President Trump's State of the Union address would only embolden Democrats and their media allies to continue their vendettas against him. Let bygones be bygones? Fuggedaboutit!
- Any such gestures may well tempt some GOP members of both Houses of Congress to "play nice" with their Democrat colleagues. They need to stay tough for the bruising, take-no-prisoners campaign ahead.
- Review key points the president's defense team made on the Senate floor, refuting the two impeachment articles. Also note that House proceedings denied the president his Fifth and Sixth Amendment rights.
- Blast Intelligence Committee chairman Adam "Shifty" Schiff for his Star Chamber approach and Jerry Nadler for his equally unethical behavior as chairman of the Judiciary Committee.
- Speaker Pelosi also deserves a reprimand in front of the entire Congress for initiating absurd impeachment proceedings and forwarding phony charges. Refusing to shake hands with her should be considered.
- Reiterate that Democrats have made complete fools of themselves, chasing one mirage after another. The Russia collusion hoax blew up in their faces, as did the Ukraine quid pro quo hoax. They deserve to be crushed come November.
- A clear message must come through that the GOP needs to regain the House and keep the Senate, if only to make sure that the Schiff-Nadler-Pelosi cabal does not continue its obstructionist ways during Trump's second term.
- Mr. Trump should avoid clichés such as "healing wounds," "coming together," and the like. Americans realized early on that House proceedings were political theater and never really believed that President Trump would be removed.
- In fact, as the president reviews his many stellar accomplishments, despite strong Democrat headwinds from day one, it will be evident that both he and this country are stronger than ever. Democrats gave it their best shot and failed, utterly.
- Senate majority leader McConnell has done a great job managing the acquittal process and should be thanked during the address. The president should announce he will campaign for McConnell and other GOP senators.
- The president should also thank House GOP members Devin Nunes, Matt Gaetz, and Jim Jordan for consistently and forcefully opposing unconstitutional proceedings in the Intelligence and Judiciary Committees.
