Battle of the hats

By

It used to be the bad guys wore blacks, the good guys the whites. Now a new symbol has emerged to characterize the bad guys: a cowboy hat or a CAT cap. You will see this image pop up quite frequently in the New York Times (including a profile shot in yesterday's front page).

To the elite media they have become the modern—day equivalent of the dunce cap. Howard Dean with his comment regarding guys in pick—up trucks with Confederate flags can certainly relate to this disparagement. The Times plays up the image of Bush supporters being ignorant rubes. (Note: it is resonating: a friend left a message on my answering machine during the RNC and asked if I was wearing my CAT cap glued to the TV). Dean suffered from his prejudice, when will the New York Times?
