Congratulations, Betsy!

Betsy Newmark, whose Betsy's Page blog is one of the very best, is a social studies teacher in North Carolina. How nice to learn that her charter school has been ranked #9 in the entire country by Jay Matthews of the Washington Post, who is, by far, the best education writer in the country. With at least one teacher in posession of mind as fine as Betsy's the only surprise is that the rank isn't higher.

Stunning to me was the number of schools in red state regions. So much for the self—esteem of the blue state elitists.

In the interest of full disclosure, Jay and I knew each other as friends at Harvard in the ancient past. I have never met Betsy. Both are highly admirable people.
