Mayor Nagin attempts to disarm his own citizens

By

While the New Orleans mayor and his family are getting settled in Dallas, Texas, his latest, and hopefully final official act was carried out by his police superintendent last Thursday.  The National Rifle Association reports that the superintendent has declared that 'only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons.'

The NRA notes a New York Times report that local authorities have decided that no civilians in the city will be allowed to have guns.  Since the local government and police have proved ineffectual in responding to the disaster and in protecting the citizens, then by golly, in typical liberal, big—city fashion, the people of New Orleans can't be allowed to have the means of self—protection, either.

Chris W. Cox, the NRA's chief lobbyist, acknowledged that there is a Louisiana state statute that allows the chief law enforcement officer to "regulate possession" of firearms during declared emergencies.  Cox also said "But regulate doesn't mean confiscate."  The NRA is exploring all legal options in order to permit law abiding residents the ability to defend themselves.  Cox also noted,

"Authorities are using that statute to do what the looters and criminals could not: disarm the law—abiding citizens of New Orleans trying to protect their homes and families."

Mayor Nagin's betrayal of the people of New Orleans is now complete.
